Power BI Interview Questions: Models, DAX and Performance

Power BI interviews focus on star-schema modelling, DAX (especially CALCULATE and filter context), Power Query transformations, relationships, row-level security, refresh options and fixing slow reports. Expect a scenario where you design a model or write a measure.

Sample answers

Explain context, not just syntax.

Most Power BI follow-ups test whether you understand filter and row context.

Model answers for 4 Power BI questions

Typical round: concepts, DAX on screen, a model design scenario

Q: What does CALCULATE do? A: It evaluates an expression in a modified filter context. For example, CALCULATE(SUM(Sales[Amount]), Region[Name] = "North") returns North sales regardless of the region slicer, unless other filters still apply. It is also how row context becomes filter context inside iterators.

Q: Calculated column vs measure? A: A calculated column is computed at refresh, stored per row and uses row context; use it for slicing or grouping. A measure is computed at query time in the current filter context; use it for aggregations like totals and ratios. Prefer measures to keep the model small.

Q: Why use a star schema? A: Fact tables hold numeric events and dimension tables hold descriptive attributes. Single-direction one-to-many relationships from dimensions to facts make filters predictable, DAX simpler and reports faster.

Q: A report is slow. What do you check? A: Use Performance Analyzer to find the slow visual, then check the model for unnecessary columns, high-cardinality fields, bidirectional relationships and heavy calculated columns, and simplify DAX that iterates large tables.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Modelling

Star schema, relationships, cardinality and filter direction underpin every good report.

  • DAX understanding

CALCULATE, filter context and time intelligence questions separate users from developers.

  • Performance

Performance Analyzer, model size and refresh strategy show production experience.

  • Security and sharing

Row-level security, workspaces and apps show you can deliver reports safely.

Concept questions

  • What are the main Power BI components?
  • Import vs DirectQuery?
  • What is Power Query?
  • What is a slicer?
  • What is a gateway?

DAX tasks

  • Write a year-to-date sales measure.
  • Write a measure for % of total sales.
  • Calculate same period last year sales.
  • Rank products by revenue with RANKX.
  • Count distinct customers who ordered this month.

Scenario questions

  • Design a model for sales, products, stores and dates.
  • Show managers only their own region's data.
  • The dataset refresh takes 2 hours. How do you fix it?
  • Two fact tables need a shared date filter. How?
  • Users want Excel exports of every visual. What do you suggest?

Actionable tips

  2. 2Draw your modelSketching facts, dimensions and relationships helps you answer scenario questions clearly.
  3. 3Mention a performance fixOne real example of making a report faster is a strong answer for experienced roles.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is Power BI?

Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence tool for connecting to data, modelling it, and building interactive reports and dashboards shared through the Power BI Service.

What are the main components of Power BI?

Power BI Desktop for building reports, Power Query for data preparation, the data model and DAX for calculations, Power BI Service for sharing, and gateways for refreshing on-premises data.

What is the difference between Import and DirectQuery?

Import loads data into Power BI's in-memory engine for fast reports but needs scheduled refresh. DirectQuery queries the source live, giving fresher data but slower visuals and some DAX limits.

What is DAX?

Data Analysis Expressions is the formula language for measures, calculated columns and tables in Power BI, Analysis Services and Power Pivot.

What is the difference between a measure and a calculated column?

A calculated column is stored per row at refresh using row context. A measure is calculated on the fly in the current filter context and is preferred for aggregations.

What does CALCULATE do in DAX?

CALCULATE evaluates an expression after modifying the filter context with the filters you pass, and converts row context to filter context when used inside iterators.

What is filter context and row context?

Filter context is the set of filters applied from visuals, slicers and CALCULATE. Row context is the current row during an iteration, such as in a calculated column or SUMX.

What is a star schema?

A model with central fact tables holding transactions and surrounding dimension tables like Date, Product and Customer, linked by one-to-many relationships.

What is row-level security?

RLS restricts which rows a user can see by defining roles with DAX filters, such as limiting a regional manager to their region.

What is Power Query used for?

Power Query extracts and transforms data before loading: removing columns, changing types, merging and appending tables, and unpivoting, using the M language.

What is a date table and why is it needed?

A continuous calendar table marked as a date table enables time intelligence functions like TOTALYTD and SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR to work correctly.

What is a gateway in Power BI?

An on-premises data gateway lets Power BI Service securely refresh or query data stored on local servers or private networks.

How do you improve Power BI report performance?

Reduce columns and cardinality, use a star schema, avoid bidirectional relationships where possible, prefer measures over calculated columns, and use incremental refresh for large tables.

What is the difference between a report and a dashboard?

A report has one or more interactive pages built from a dataset. A dashboard in Power BI Service is a single page of pinned tiles that can come from several reports.

How should I prepare for a Power BI interview?

Build a star-schema report on a sample dataset, practise common DAX measures, learn RLS and refresh options, and prepare one example of a performance or adoption win.
