Portfolio Website for Freshers: Proof Beyond Your Resume

A fresher portfolio website needs six things: a one-line intro, 3-4 projects with your role and results, skills, a resume download, contact links and fast mobile loading. Quality of two or three projects matters more than design.

Sample project write-up

The part recruiters actually read.

Most visitors skim the home page and open one project. Make that project page answer what, how, and what changed.

Project: Campus Food Pre-Order App

React, Node.js, MongoDB | 4-person team | My role: backend and payments

Problem: Students lost 15-20 minutes of lunch break queuing at the campus canteen, and the canteen wasted food because it could not predict demand.

What I built: The Node.js order API, Razorpay test-mode payment flow and an admin view showing orders per 15-minute slot. Teammates built the React screens and the menu editor.

Result: In a two-week pilot, 410 students placed 1,900 orders. Average pickup wait fell to under 4 minutes, and the canteen cut leftover meals by about a fifth using the slot data.

What I learned: Handling payment webhooks safely, designing for peak-hour load, and getting feedback from real users instead of guessing.

What recruiters look for

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Projects with context

Problem, your role, tools and outcome for each project. Screenshots alone do not explain your contribution.

  • Fast and mobile-first

Recruiters often open links on their phone. A light page that loads in a couple of seconds gets read.

  • Resume one click away

A visible PDF download and matching details between site and resume build trust.

  • Professional basics

Your name as the domain or handle, a professional email, and working links to GitHub, Behance or LinkedIn.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Sections to include

  • Header with your name, target role and one-line pitch
  • 3-4 featured projects, each with its own short write-up
  • Skills grouped by type, matching your resume
  • About section in 3-4 sentences
  • Resume PDF download
  • Contact: email, LinkedIn, GitHub or Behance

Project ideas by field

  • Developers: a deployed full-stack app, an API with docs, an open-source contribution
  • Data analysts: 2 dashboards on public data with the questions they answer
  • Designers: 2 case studies showing research, wireframes and final UI
  • Marketers: a campaign you ran, with reach, leads or growth numbers
  • Writers: 5 published samples across formats, with links

Mistakes to avoid

  • Showing 10 tutorial projects instead of 3 original ones
  • No explanation of your role in team projects
  • Broken demo links or private repositories
  • Heavy animations that slow the page on mobile
  • Details that do not match your resume

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Start with your best projectPut the most relevant project for your target role first. Recruiters rarely scroll past the second one.
  2. 2Use free hostingGitHub Pages, Vercel and Netlify host static portfolios for free, and a custom domain costs a few hundred rupees a year.
  3. 3Write for skimmersShort paragraphs, bold outcomes and one image per section make a project readable in under a minute.
  4. 4Keep it updatedAdd each new internship or project within a week, and remove weaker older work.
  5. 5Link it everywherePut the URL in your resume header, LinkedIn Featured section and email signature. BrainUp's Portfolio Generator can build the first version from your resume.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

Do freshers need a portfolio website?

It is not mandatory, but it helps a lot for developer, design, data, marketing and writing roles because it shows real work that a one-page resume cannot.

What should a fresher portfolio website include?

Include a short intro, 3-4 projects with your role and results, grouped skills, an about section, a resume PDF and contact links.

How many projects should be in a fresher portfolio?

Three to four strong projects are enough. Two original, well-explained projects beat ten tutorial clones.

Where can I host a portfolio website for free?

GitHub Pages, Vercel and Netlify all host static portfolio sites for free. Notion, Behance and Canva sites work for non-developers.

Should I put my portfolio link on my resume?

Yes. Add it in the resume header next to your email, phone and LinkedIn, and make sure the link works on mobile.

Can non-tech freshers make a portfolio?

Yes. Marketing, content, design, HR and finance freshers can show campaigns, writing samples, case studies or Excel models in a simple portfolio site.
