One Page Resume: Cut to What Gets You the Interview

A one page resume suits freshers and anyone with up to about 5 years of experience. Fit it by cutting low-value content first (objective, hobbies, school marks, old duties), keeping 3-5 strong bullets for recent roles, and only then adjusting margins and font size within readable limits.

One-page checklist

Cut content before you shrink the font.

Follow this order. Most resumes fit on one page after the first three steps.

How to fit your resume on one page

Body 10.5-11 pt | Margins 0.5-0.75 in | Line spacing 1.0-1.15

1. Remove the objective and replace it with a 2-line summary, or drop it entirely if space is tight.

2. Cut hobbies, declaration, references, full address and personal details like date of birth and marital status.

3. Trim bullets: 3-5 for your current role, 2-3 for earlier roles, 1-2 for internships. Delete duties and keep results.

4. Merge skills into 2-3 grouped lines instead of a long vertical list.

5. Shorten education to degree, institution, year and score. Drop school marks unless they're asked for.

6. Only now adjust layout: margins to 0.5-0.75 inch and body font to 10.5-11 pt. Don't go below 10 pt.

7. Check the last line: if one line spills to page two, rewrite a long bullet rather than squeezing spacing.

Why one page works

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Faster to scan

Recruiters spend seconds on a first pass. One page puts your best proof in view immediately.

  • Forces prioritisation

Fitting one page makes you keep results and drop filler, which strengthens the whole resume.

  • ATS-friendly

One clean column fits easily on one page and parses reliably.

  • Expected for freshers

Campus recruiters and many portals expect freshers to submit one page.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Cut first

  • Career objective
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Declaration and signature
  • School marks once you have a degree
  • Duties without results

Always keep

  • Contact details and LinkedIn
  • Your most recent role or best project
  • Bullets with numbers
  • Skills that match the job
  • Degree and institution

When two pages is right

  • More than 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • Senior or leadership roles with wide scope
  • Technical roles with many essential projects
  • UAE and some international applications
  • Academic or research CVs (often longer)

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Prioritise by relevanceFor each line ask: would this help me get this job? If not, cut it.
  2. 2Combine short rolesGroup brief internships or contracts under one heading with a few bullets.
  3. 3Use one columnTwo-column templates look like they save space but often hurt ATS parsing.
  4. 4Don't shrink below 10 ptA readable two-page resume beats a cramped one-page resume.
  5. 5Let a builder handle spacingBrainUp's templates keep a one-page layout balanced as you edit.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

Should my resume be one page?

Yes if you're a fresher or have up to about 5 years of experience. Experienced professionals with more relevant history can use two pages.

How do I fit my resume on one page?

Remove the objective, hobbies and personal details, trim bullets to results, group skills, shorten education, and only then reduce margins and font slightly.

What font size should a one page resume use?

10.5 to 11 pt for body text, 13 to 14 pt for headings. Avoid going below 10 pt.

Is a one page resume better for ATS?

ATS reads both one- and two-page resumes. What matters is a simple layout and relevant keywords, not page count.

Can freshers have a two page resume?

Rarely. Most freshers have enough strong content for one page; two pages usually means filler.

What should I cut first from my resume?

Career objective, hobbies, declaration, school marks, personal details and bullets that describe duties without results.
