DevOps Interview Questions: Pipelines, Containers and Uptime

DevOps interviews cover CI/CD pipeline design, Git workflows, Docker images, Kubernetes basics, infrastructure as code with Terraform, monitoring and alerting, safe deployment strategies, and how you respond to incidents.

Sample answers

Explain the pipeline you actually built.

DevOps interviewers trust specifics: tools, stages, timings and failure handling.

Model answers for 4 DevOps questions

Typical round: concepts, pipeline walkthrough, troubleshooting scenario

Q: Walk me through your CI/CD pipeline. A: On every pull request, GitHub Actions runs lint, unit tests and a Docker build. On merge to main, it pushes the image to ECR, runs Terraform plan and apply for infra changes, and deploys to staging with Helm. Production deploys are manual approvals with a canary rollout and automatic rollback on error-rate alarms.

Q: How do you make Docker images smaller and safer? A: Use multi-stage builds, a slim or distroless base, copy only what's needed, run as a non-root user, pin versions, and scan images in CI for vulnerabilities.

Q: A pod is in CrashLoopBackOff. How do you debug it? A: kubectl describe pod for events, kubectl logs --previous for the crashed container's output, then check config and secrets, resource limits (OOMKilled), liveness probe settings and the image tag.

Q: What is the difference between blue-green and canary deployments? A: Blue-green switches all traffic from the old to a full new environment at once, with quick rollback. Canary shifts a small percentage of traffic first and increases it as metrics stay healthy.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Pipeline design

Stages, gates, artefacts and rollbacks show you can ship safely and often.

  • Container skills

Dockerfiles, image hygiene and Kubernetes objects are core to most DevOps roles.

  • Infrastructure as code

Terraform modules, state management and plan reviews prove repeatable infrastructure.

  • Reliability mindset

Monitoring, alerting, SLOs and incident response separate operators from scripters.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Fundamentals

  • What is DevOps?
  • What is CI vs CD?
  • What is a Docker image vs container?
  • What is a Kubernetes pod?
  • What is infrastructure as code?

Tools questions

  • Jenkins vs GitHub Actions?
  • Deployment vs StatefulSet?
  • What is Terraform state and why lock it?
  • Ansible vs Terraform?
  • Prometheus and Grafana: what does each do?

Troubleshooting scenarios

  • A deploy broke production. What do you do first?
  • Builds take 25 minutes. How do you speed them up?
  • A pod is OOMKilled. What do you check?
  • Terraform plan wants to destroy a database. Now what?
  • Disk is full on a server at 2 a.m. Walk me through it.

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Describe one pipeline end to endFrom commit to production, with tools and timings, is the strongest DevOps answer you can give.
  2. 2Know your kubectl commandsdescribe, logs, get events and rollout undo come up in troubleshooting questions.
  3. 3Show safety habitsApprovals, canaries, rollbacks and Terraform plan reviews show you protect production.
  4. 4Have an incident storyExplain detection, mitigation, root cause and the follow-up you put in place.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is DevOps?

DevOps is a set of practices and culture that brings development and operations together to ship software faster and more reliably through automation, CI/CD, monitoring and shared ownership.

What is the difference between CI and CD?

Continuous integration builds and tests every change automatically. Continuous delivery keeps code always deployable; continuous deployment goes further and releases automatically.

What is the difference between a Docker image and a container?

An image is a read-only template with the app and its dependencies. A container is a running instance of an image.

What is a Kubernetes pod?

The smallest deployable unit in Kubernetes, holding one or more containers that share networking and storage.

What is a Kubernetes Deployment?

A controller that manages ReplicaSets to keep a desired number of pods running and supports rolling updates and rollbacks.

What is infrastructure as code?

Managing infrastructure through versioned code, for example with Terraform or CloudFormation, so environments are repeatable, reviewable and automated.

What is Terraform state?

A file mapping your configuration to real resources. Store it remotely with locking, such as S3 with DynamoDB or Terraform Cloud, so teams don't corrupt it.

What is the difference between Ansible and Terraform?

Terraform provisions infrastructure declaratively. Ansible mainly configures servers and applications. Many teams use both.

What deployment strategies do you know?

Rolling updates, blue-green, canary and feature flags. Each trades rollout speed against risk and resource cost.

What is a Git branching strategy?

A convention for branches, such as trunk-based development with short-lived feature branches, or GitFlow with develop and release branches.

What is monitoring vs observability?

Monitoring tracks known metrics and alerts. Observability uses metrics, logs and traces to answer new questions about system behaviour.

What are SLIs, SLOs and SLAs?

An SLI is a measured indicator like latency. An SLO is the target for it. An SLA is a contractual commitment, usually with penalties.

How do you secure a CI/CD pipeline?

Store secrets in a vault or the CI secret store, use short-lived credentials, scan code and images, restrict who can deploy, and require reviews on main.

Can freshers get DevOps jobs?

Yes, especially with Linux, Git, scripting, Docker and a cloud basics certification, plus a project that deploys an app through a working pipeline.

How should I prepare for a DevOps interview?

Build a pipeline that tests, builds a Docker image and deploys to Kubernetes or a cloud service with Terraform, then practise explaining it and troubleshooting failures.
