Model answers for 4 job-switch questions

Keep answers under 90 seconds

Q: Why are you leaving your current job? A: I've grown a lot in three years, from handling one region's reports to owning the national MIS. The next step I want is building analytics products, not just reports, and this role is centred on that. My current team has no opening for it in the near term.

Q: Tell me about your biggest achievement. A: Last year our month-end close took nine working days. I mapped the delays, automated four reconciliations in Excel and Power Query, and agreed new cut-off dates with two teams. We now close in five days, and the CFO uses the earlier numbers in board reviews.

Q: Tell me about a time you failed. A: I committed to a vendor go-live date without checking the client's testing capacity, and we slipped by three weeks. Since then I plan UAT with the client before agreeing dates, and my last two releases went live on time.

Q: What is your expected CTC? A: My current CTC is 9 lakh fixed. Based on the role's scope and market range, I'm looking for 12 to 13 lakh, and I'm open to discussing the full package, including variable pay.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Results with numbers

Experienced candidates are judged on outcomes: revenue, time saved, quality improved, team size handled.

  • A clean reason to move

Your reason for leaving should point towards the new role, never criticise your current employer.

  • Judgment under pressure

Failure, conflict and prioritisation questions test how you think, not just what you know.

  • Clear practical details

Notice period, expected CTC and joining date answered calmly and consistently build trust.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What are the most common interview questions for experienced candidates?

Walk me through your career, why are you leaving, your biggest achievement, a failure, a conflict, why this company, expected CTC, notice period and questions for the interviewer.

How do I answer 'why are you leaving your current job'?

Give a forward-looking reason such as wider scope, a new domain or a skill you want to build, and connect it to this role. Do not criticise your current employer.

How do I answer 'tell me about your biggest achievement'?

Use STAR: the situation, your goal, the actions you personally took, and a measurable result. Pick something recent and relevant to the new role.

How should I answer 'tell me about a time you failed'?

Pick a real but recoverable failure, own your part, explain what you changed afterwards, and show a later result that proves you learned.

How do I answer expected CTC questions?

Share your current CTC honestly, give a researched range for the new role, and say you are open to discussing the full package.

How do I talk about my notice period?

State it clearly, say whether early release or buyout is possible, and give a realistic joining date. Do not promise dates you cannot meet.

How do I answer 'why should we hire you' as an experienced candidate?

Link two or three of your proven results to the problems this role must solve, and mention how quickly you can contribute.

How do I explain frequent job changes?

Give a short, honest reason for each move, show a consistent direction in your career, and state why you plan to stay longer this time.

What is the STAR method?

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. It structures behavioural answers so they are short, specific and focused on what you did.

How do I answer conflict questions?

Describe a work disagreement, how you listened and found common ground, and the outcome. Show respect for the other person throughout.

What should I say about my current manager?

Stay neutral or positive. Mention what you learned from them, even if the relationship was difficult.

How do I answer 'do you have other offers'?

Be truthful. If you have offers, say so without exaggerating and explain why this role is still your preference.

How do I answer leadership questions without a manager title?

Use examples of leading projects, mentoring juniors, or driving a change across teams. Leadership is about influence, not just title.

How long should answers be for experienced interviews?

Around 60 to 120 seconds for behavioural answers, and shorter for factual questions. Pause and let the interviewer ask follow-ups.

What questions should experienced candidates ask?

Ask about the problems the role must solve in the first six months, how success is measured, team structure and how decisions are made.

How do I prepare for a job-switch interview?

Update your resume, prepare five STAR stories with numbers, research the company, know your CTC and notice details, and run at least one mock interview.
