Canada Resume Format: What to Change From Your Indian Resume

A Canadian resume is 1-2 pages, reverse-chronological and achievement-focused, with no photo, date of birth, marital status, nationality or full address. Add your city and province (or 'Relocating to Toronto'), work authorisation if relevant, and quantified results in Canadian-friendly terms.

Canadian resume layout

What to keep, cut and add.

Most changes are removals. Canadian employers avoid details that could lead to hiring bias.

Canada resume format: header and sections

Letter size (8.5 x 11 in) | 1-2 pages | Reverse-chronological | PDF

Header: Name, phone with country code, email, LinkedIn, and city and province, for example 'Toronto, ON' or 'Pune, India - relocating to Calgary, Feb 2027'.

Work status line (optional): 'Open work permit' or 'Permanent resident' if it helps employers see you can start without sponsorship.

Professional summary: 3 lines with years of experience, field and two key strengths with a result.

Experience: Title, company, city and country, month and year. 3-5 bullets with outcomes. Explain lesser-known Indian companies in a few words, such as 'a 2,000-employee IT services firm'.

Education: Degree, institution, country, year. Add credential evaluation (for example WES) if you have one.

Skills and certifications: Technical skills, Canadian certifications if any, and languages (English and French levels).

Remove: Photo, date of birth, gender, marital status, religion, father's name, passport number and a 'Declaration' line.

What Canadian recruiters expect

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • No personal details

Canadian employers avoid photos, age, marital status and similar details to prevent bias.

  • Achievement-led bullets

Results with numbers matter more than responsibilities or job descriptions.

  • ATS-ready

Most Canadian employers use ATS. Single-column layouts and exact keywords help you pass.

  • Context for Indian experience

Briefly explain company size or market so recruiters understand your experience.

Examples

Copy the structure, not the wording.

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

  • Work authorisation status if it helps
  • Credential evaluation such as WES
  • Language levels: English (IELTS/CELPIP) and French if any
  • Volunteer work, which Canadian employers value

Wording changes

  • 'Lakh' and 'crore' to dollar or simple numbers
  • 'Fresher' to 'recent graduate'
  • 'CTC' to 'salary' (and leave it off the resume)
  • Local acronyms to full names
  • 'Pass out year' to 'graduation year'

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Use Letter sizeCanadian documents use 8.5 x 11 inch Letter paper, not A4. Set it before exporting PDF.
  2. 2Convert figures carefullyUse plain numbers or approximate CAD values, for example 'USD 1.2M' or '12% cost reduction'.
  3. 3Add volunteer experienceCommunity and volunteer work count in Canada and help newcomers show local involvement.
  4. 4Tailor to each postingCanadian ATS screening rewards matching the job's exact keywords and job titles.
  5. 5Pair with a cover letterMany Canadian employers still expect one; BrainUp's Cover Letter Builder can draft it.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is the Canadian resume format?

A 1-2 page, reverse-chronological resume with a summary, achievement-focused experience, education and skills, and no photo or personal details like age or marital status.

Should I include a photo on a Canadian resume?

No. Photos are not expected in Canada and can lead to your resume being set aside to avoid bias.

How long should a Canadian resume be?

One page for students and early-career applicants, two pages for experienced professionals.

Should I mention my work permit on my resume?

It can help to state permanent residency or an open work permit briefly, so employers know you don't need sponsorship.

Do I need a cover letter for jobs in Canada?

Many employers expect or appreciate one. A short, tailored letter improves your chances, especially as a newcomer.

How do I describe Indian experience on a Canadian resume?

Add brief context about company size or industry, quantify results in plain numbers, and use internationally understood job titles.
