Short answer: Write a headline with your target role, top skills, experience and city; fill Key Skills with the exact terms recruiters use in job descriptions; upload a current PDF resume; complete every field including notice period and preferred location; and make a small genuine update every week or two while you are searching.
Recruiters do not browse Naukri profiles like a newspaper. They type keywords and set filters: skill, experience, location, notice period, last active date. If your profile does not match those terms, it may never appear on their screen, however strong you are.
This guide walks through each part of the profile with that recruiter search in mind. We do not know Naukri’s internal ranking rules and will not pretend to; everything here is about matching what recruiters search for and staying visibly active.
The Search-Match-Fresh method
- Search: find the words recruiters use for your target role.
- Match: put those words in your headline, key skills, summary and resume.
- Fresh: keep the profile complete and recently updated.
Find your keywords from three job descriptions
Open three postings for the exact role you want. List every skill, tool and title that appears in at least two of them. That list is your keyword set. Our guide to pulling keywords from a job description explains the method in detail.
Section-by-section checklist
1. Resume headline
This is the first line recruiters see. Use a simple formula:
[Target role] | [2–3 top skills] | [Experience] | [City]
| Profile | Headline (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Experienced analyst | Data Analyst | SQL, Power BI, Excel | 3 Years | Pune |
| Experienced developer | Java Backend Developer | Spring Boot, Microservices, AWS | 5 Years | Bengaluru |
| Sales | Area Sales Manager | FMCG, Distributor Management | 7 Years | Lucknow |
| Fresher | B.Tech CSE 2026 | Python, SQL, React | Seeking Software Developer Role | Hyderabad |
| Career switcher | HR Executive | Recruitment, Onboarding | Ex-Customer Support | Chennai |
“Hardworking and dedicated professional seeking a challenging role” — no role, no skills, no searchable words.

2. Key skills
- Add every keyword from your three-JD list that you genuinely have.
- Use the standard spelling recruiters use (“Power BI”, not “PowerBI dashboards”).
- Put core skills first; remove outdated ones you no longer want to work with.
- Do not add skills you cannot discuss in an interview.
3. Profile summary
Three or four sentences: who you are, what you are good at with one proof point, and what you want next.
Data analyst with 3 years in retail analytics. I build SQL pipelines and Power BI dashboards used by regional sales teams, and automated our weekly sales report. Looking for analyst roles in Pune or remote where I can work on forecasting.
Our resume summary examples work well as a starting point.
4. Resume upload
- Upload a current, ATS-friendly PDF.
- Name it
Firstname_Lastname_Role.pdf. - Make sure titles and dates match your profile fields exactly.
5. Employment, education and projects
Fill every field, including designation, dates, and a line or two of responsibilities. Freshers should add projects and internships with the tools used; these are often where keyword matches happen.
6. Career preferences
| Field | Tip |
|---|---|
| Preferred locations | Add all cities you would genuinely move to, plus remote if relevant |
| Notice period | Keep it accurate; update it when you resign. See answering notice period questions |
| Current and expected CTC | Be truthful; recruiters filter on these |
| Desired role / industry | Match the role titles in your target postings |
7. Photo and contact details
A clear, professional photo and verified email and phone number make the profile look complete and reachable.
Keep it fresh: an update plan
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Weekly (active search) | A small genuine edit: refine a skill, tweak the summary, add a project |
| Every month | Re-check keywords against 2–3 new postings |
| After any change | Update notice period, CTC, location, or new certifications immediately |
| When you get a job | Switch your profile to passive or hidden to stop calls |
Common mistakes
- An old resume that contradicts the profile fields
- A vague headline without the role name
- “Immediate joiner” when you have a 90-day notice
- Applying to everything, which floods your inbox with irrelevant calls
- Ignoring recruiter messages; reply even when declining
