Angular Interview Questions: Change Detection, RxJS and Signals

Angular interviews cover components and lifecycle hooks, dependency injection, change detection and OnPush, RxJS operators and subscriptions, signals, routing and guards, reactive forms, and performance techniques like lazy loading.

Sample answers

Show you understand what triggers a render.

Change detection and RxJS are where Angular interviews go deep.

Model answers for 4 Angular questions

Typical round: concepts, RxJS scenario, a component task

Q: What does OnPush change detection do? A: The component is checked only when an input reference changes, an event fires inside it, an async pipe emits, a signal it reads changes, or you mark it for check. It skips many unnecessary checks, but you must treat inputs as immutable.

Q: switchMap vs mergeMap? A: switchMap cancels the previous inner observable when a new value arrives, ideal for search-as-you-type. mergeMap runs all inner observables concurrently, useful when every request must complete. concatMap queues them in order.

Q: What are signals? A: Reactive values introduced in Angular 16. Reading a signal in a template or computed() tracks it, and updating it notifies only dependants. They simplify state and enable finer-grained change detection than zone-based checks.

Q: How do you avoid memory leaks with subscriptions? A: Prefer the async pipe, use takeUntilDestroyed() or a destroy notifier, and avoid manual subscriptions in components where a template binding works.

What interviewers check

Built for scanners, humans and hiring intent.

  • Change detection

Default vs OnPush, zone.js and signals reveal whether you can keep large apps fast.

  • RxJS operators

Choosing the right flattening operator and cleaning up subscriptions is a core skill.

  • App architecture

Modules or standalone components, DI scopes, routing and state management choices.

  • Performance

Lazy loading, trackBy, deferrable views and bundle budgets show production experience.

Examples

These examples show shape and specificity. Add your own facts, metrics, tools and outcomes.

Core concepts

  • What are lifecycle hooks?
  • Component vs directive?
  • What is dependency injection in Angular?
  • What are standalone components?
  • What is a pipe?

RxJS and state

  • Subject vs BehaviorSubject?
  • When would you use NgRx?
  • What is the async pipe?
  • What is computed() vs effect()?
  • How do you share state between sibling components?

Practical scenarios

  • Implement search with debounce and cancellation.
  • Protect a route for logged-in users.
  • Build a reactive form with custom validation.
  • A list of 5,000 rows is slow. What do you do?
  • Migrate a module-based app to standalone components.

Actionable tips

Small edits that lift response rates.

Run through these before every application.

  1. 1Know your versionSay which Angular version you use and one feature from it, such as signals or deferrable views.
  2. 2Practise RxJS scenariosSearch, polling, retries and combining API calls are common tasks.
  3. 3Explain DI scopesprovidedIn root vs component-level providers is a frequent follow-up.
  4. 4Bring a performance storyOnPush, trackBy or lazy loading you introduced, with a measured improvement.

FAQ

Common questions, direct answers.

What is Angular?

Angular is a TypeScript-based framework from Google for building web apps, with built-in routing, forms, HTTP client, dependency injection and testing tools.

What are Angular lifecycle hooks?

Methods like ngOnInit, ngOnChanges, ngAfterViewInit and ngOnDestroy that run at specific points in a component's life.

What is dependency injection in Angular?

A system where Angular creates and supplies services to components and other services, configured through providers at root, route or component level.

What is change detection?

The process Angular uses to update the DOM when data changes. Default checks the whole tree after events; OnPush and signals limit checks to what changed.

What is the difference between Subject and BehaviorSubject?

A Subject emits only new values to subscribers. A BehaviorSubject needs an initial value and gives new subscribers the latest value immediately.

What is the async pipe?

A template pipe that subscribes to an observable or promise, renders its latest value and unsubscribes automatically when the component is destroyed.

What are Angular signals?

Reactive primitives that hold values and notify dependants when updated, used with computed() for derived values and effect() for side effects.

What are standalone components?

Components that declare their own imports without an NgModule, the default approach in recent Angular versions.

Template-driven vs reactive forms?

Template-driven forms are defined in HTML with ngModel and suit simple forms. Reactive forms are defined in TypeScript, are more testable and suit complex validation.

What are route guards?

Functions or classes like canActivate and canMatch that decide whether navigation can proceed, commonly for authentication and permissions.

What is lazy loading in Angular?

Loading feature routes or components only when needed, using loadComponent or loadChildren, to reduce the initial bundle size.

What is trackBy?

A function used with ngFor, or the track expression in the new @for block, so Angular reuses DOM elements for items with the same identity.

When should you use NgRx?

For large apps with complex shared state, many async effects and a need for predictable, debuggable state changes. Smaller apps often manage with services and signals.

What is AOT compilation?

Ahead-of-time compilation converts templates to JavaScript at build time, giving faster rendering, smaller bundles and earlier template error detection.

How should I prepare for an Angular interview?

Revise change detection, RxJS and DI, build a small app with routing, forms and API calls, and prepare one performance or migration story.
